Celebrating Two Decades of Sustainable Cruising: Carnival Corporation and Port Seattle’s Shoreside Power Partnership
Carnival Corporation celebrated a significant milestone on June 18, 2025, marking two decades since its first vessel connected to shoreside electrical power in Seattle. This achievement is a testament to Carnival’s collaboration with the Port of Seattle, facilitating quieter and cleaner cruising.
On June 18, 2005, the Diamond Princess, operating under Princess Cruises, became the first ship in Seattle to receive power directly from the city grid at Terminal 30, eliminating the need to run diesel generators. This made Seattle the second port worldwide to implement such technology, following Juneau, as part of Princess Cruises’ early investment in reducing carbon emissions.
Shoreside power allows cruise ships to switch off their engines while docked, drawing electricity straight from the land. A Carnival executive praised the company’s role in introducing this innovative technology in Seattle. He remarked on the importance of the enduring partnership with the Port, especially given how revolutionary the system was at the time.
In 2009, with the opening of the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal (Pier 91), Carnival relocated its shore power equipment there, ensuring its availability at that berth. Eventually, all three cruise berths in Seattle were outfitted with shore power, encouraged by the Port, which recognized it as instrumental in facilitating these connections.
A Port Commissioner acknowledged Carnival’s leadership in promoting shared sustainable goals alongside Seattle City Light and other partners. This collaborative effort also led to the growth of Watts Marine, recognized globally for shore power solutions, which completed the installation at Pier 66 in September 2024, bringing all cruise berths online with electrical capabilities.
Today, Seattle is among a select group of home ports capable of providing power to three docked cruise ships simultaneously, helping to improve air quality across Elliott Bay and reinforcing the city’s dedication to maritime environmental stewardship.
Carnival’s role in this initiative, from the initial implementation to the ongoing evolution of shore power in Seattle, highlights a transformative journey from a single berth technology to a comprehensive waterfront solution driven by shared commitments to sustainability.
