Holland America’s Westerdam Makes Waves: A Journey into the Arctic Circle

Holland America Line’s Westerdam achieved a remarkable milestone on June 20, as it crossed into the Arctic Circle during its special 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice cruise, which departed from Seattle on June 8 and is set to return on July 6.

During the voyage, guests experienced a unique long cruise with port calls in cities such as Sitka, Dutch Harbor, Nome, and Kodiak. A highlight of the trip occurred at 10:00 a.m. on June 20, when guests gathered at the ship’s bow to celebrate crossing into the Arctic Circle on the Summer Solstice. This event marks the southernmost point where the midnight sun can be observed.

Captain Eric van der Wal played a crucial role in navigating the ship through this journey. He utilized satellite imagery and ice forecasts to make real-time navigational decisions, adapting to changing weather conditions and ice patterns. Fortunately, the ice began to subside, enabling Westerdam to safely continue northward.

“As we crossed into the Arctic Circle beneath the endless summer sky, it wasn’t just a line on a map—we hope it will be a memory for our Holland America Line guests that shines as brightly as the midnight sun,” Captain van der Wal shared with the guests.

To commemorate this special crossing, the ship’s horn sounded, guests took photos at the bow, and opportunities for mingling with officers and crew were welcomed. Each guest was presented with a commemorative certificate celebrating the occasion.
