AmaMagdalena: A New Chapter Unfolds on Colombia’s Magdalena River

AmaWaterways recently launched its new luxury river cruise ship, AmaMagdalena, marked by a formal christening ceremony on June 17 in the UNESCO-listed town of Mompox, Colombia. This vessel breaks new ground as the first luxury river cruiser to navigate the historic Magdalena River, promoting sustainable tourism within the region.

The event featured attendance from various dignitaries, including local government officials and representatives from Colombia’s Ministries of Tourism, Transport, and Defense. Their participation highlighted the collaborative effort between AmaWaterways and both public and private entities that made this project a reality over the last three years.

Local citizens also gathered along the riverbanks to witness the ship’s blessing, emphasizing the community’s pride in this milestone.

AmaMagdalena is designed to host up to 60 passengers and incorporates inputs from local designers and artisans. The ship’s interiors are crafted under architect Camilo Restrepo’s guidance and showcase handcrafted woodwork from Cartagena’s Ocean Projects and furniture by Barranquilla’s Casa Schlegel Donado. It offers various facilities catering to an intimate river cruise experience, including a Sun Deck pool, a fitness room, a Main Restaurant with a mix of Latin American and Western dishes, and an al-fresco specialty dining option.

The ship provides two unique seven-night itineraries—“Magic of Colombia” and “Wonders of Colombia”—operating between Cartagena and Barranquilla. These journeys include cultural experiences such as a private celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, guided tours in Mompox, birdwatching excursions, and visits to Palenque, known as the Americas’ first free town. Optional land extensions are available in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.

During the christening, AmaWaterways co-founder and CEO Rudi Schreiner emphasized the importance of the ship’s launch in accessing a region that luxury cruises had previously overlooked. He praised the collaboration with local communities, ensuring that both visitors and residents benefit from this venture.

Kristin Karst, co-founder and Chief Brand Ambassador of AmaWaterways, noted the community’s warm welcome for AmaMagdalena, describing the event as the realization of a vision that blends cultural exploration with economic opportunities for local residents. ProColombia also expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to enhance high-end tourism and showcase Colombia’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

With plans for a sister ship, AmaMelodia, AmaWaterways aims to continue its commitment to Colombian river cruising later this year.
