AmaMagdalena: A New Vessel Christened on Colombia’s Historic Magdalena River
AmaWaterways has officially launched a new vessel, AmaMagdalena, during a christening ceremony held in the historic town of Mompox, Colombia, on June 17, 2025. As the first luxury river cruise ship to navigate the renowned Magdalena River, AmaMagdalena marks a significant step forward in promoting sustainable tourism within the region.
The ceremony was attended by various officials, including representatives from local government, Colombia’s Ministries of Tourism, Transport, and Defense, as well as entities like ProColombia, Fontur, and Cormagdalena. This collaboration highlights the support from both public and private sectors that played a crucial role in bringing the project to fruition over the past three years.
Local residents gathered along the riverbanks to witness the ship’s blessing, demonstrating their strong connection to this landmark event. Accommodating 60 passengers, the vessel boasts interiors crafted by local designers and artisans, under the guidance of architect Camilo Restrepo. Notable features include custom woodwork from Cartagena and furniture by Barranquilla’s Casa Schlegel Donado. The ship is equipped with premium amenities such as a Sun Deck pool, a fitness center, a Main Restaurant offering Latin American and Western cuisine, and an outdoor specialty dining area.
AmaMagdalena’s itinerary includes two immersive seven-night journeys—the “Magic of Colombia” and “Wonders of Colombia”—which operate between Cartagena and Barranquilla. The itineraries promise cultural experiences, such as exclusive celebrations during the Barranquilla Carnival, heritage tours, birdwatching, visits to Palenque (the first free town in the Americas), and jazz performances in Mompox.
Additionally, optional land extensions in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City are available. During speeches at the event, Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and CEO of AmaWaterways, noted that the launch of AmaMagdalena creates access to luxury cruising in a previously underexplored region, while Kristin Karst, co-founder and Chief Brand Ambassador, remarked on the pride expressed by local residents during the ship’s arrival.
ProColombia’s leadership further emphasized the initiative’s significance in boosting high-end tourism, showcasing Colombia’s rich cultural and natural heritage. AmaWaterways also has plans to expand its commitment to Colombian river cruising with the upcoming introduction of a sister ship, AmaMelodia, later this year.
