TUI and HD Hyundai Join Forces to Pioneer Hydrogen SOFC Power for Cruise Ships

TUI Cruises is venturing into a groundbreaking partnership with South Korean shipbuilders and the European classification society DNV to develop hydrogen-powered solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems for cruise ships. The collaboration, which involves HD Hyundai and its various subsidiaries, aims to establish safety and design standards for SOFC applications in maritime settings by February 2026.

As part of this initiative, HD Hyundai will evaluate the operational performance of these fuel cells under various conditions and work on a system to reclaim and utilize the heat produced by the high-temperature SOFC units. TUI will provide essential data regarding cruise ship operations, installation, and specifications to help adapt this technology for marine use.

Solid oxide fuel cell technology boasts significant efficiency advantages over traditional combustion engines, promising lower emissions and pollutants. Its design, which allows for the use of multiple emissions-free fuels, positions it as a viable option for future decarbonization efforts.

Although the maritime sector is showing increasing interest in SOFC technology, its commercial viability is not yet assured. For instance, Bosch has decided to halt its SOFC development in favor of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, indicating cautious sentiment toward large-scale adoption.

Conversely, research efforts in Asian countries, particularly South Korea and Japan, continue robustly as stakeholders explore the potential of SOFC technology.

This collaboration places TUI Cruises at the helm of maritime innovation, aligning its objectives with promoting cleaner and more efficient propulsion systems while adhering to evolving environmental regulations.
