Collision Between Bus and SUV Leaves Three Injured in Ketchikan Cruise Ship Incident
Three individuals were injured in a collision involving a school bus transporting cruise ship passengers and an SUV in Ketchikan on Thursday morning. The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. on the North Tongass Highway.
The bus was carrying 46 passengers from the Norwegian Bliss cruise ship, all of whom were on an excursion when it collided with the SUV, which subsequently crashed into a power pole. The Ketchikan Fire Department, with assistance from the North and South Tongass departments, responded to the accident. As a result of the crash, the highway experienced a brief closure.
Due to the severity of the situation, the local authorities implemented an island-wide Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) response, activating various emergency protocols, including the hospital’s disaster plan, as reported on the fire department’s Facebook page.
Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics assessed the passengers and both vehicle drivers at the scene. Most of the bus passengers, totaling 44, were medically cleared and returned to their ship at Ward Cove. However, two cruise passengers and the SUV driver were taken to PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, one of whom was reported to be in critical condition while the others had minor injuries. According to updates from the hospital, some of those injured were treated and released, while one was transferred for a higher level of care.
The Ketchikan Police Department is currently investigating the details of the collision.
