Viking Celebrates 10 Years: The Naming of Vesta in Split Marks a Milestone
In Split, Croatia, on June 30th, Viking’s newest ship, the Viking Vesta, was ceremoniously named, coinciding with the company’s 10th anniversary of ocean voyages. The 998-guest vessel, delivered by Fincantieri, embraced deep-sea traditions during the vibrant ceremony.
Norwegian journalist Lene Tangevald-Jensen served as godmother, symbolically honoring Viking’s values by cutting a ceremonial ribbon with a Viking broadaxe. A bottle of Norwegian aquavit was smashed against the ship’s hull, affirming its seaworthiness as the vessel prepares for its inaugural season.
The event was accompanied by the voices of soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø and violinist Tor Jaran Apold, melding maritime tradition with artistic expression. Torstein Hagen, Viking’s Chairman and CEO, remarked that the Viking Vesta adds to a fleet celebrated for its understated elegance and small-ship design, promising travelers an exploration experience in comfort and style through the Mediterranean and northern Europe.
Equipped with 499 veranda staterooms and Scandinavian design features, the Viking Vesta symbolizes a blend of traditional nautical ceremony with contemporary sophistication, continuing Viking’s legacy of curated travel at sea.
As it begins its first voyages, the ship stands as a testament to a decade of exploration under the Viking brand.
