Douglas Mawson Successfully Completes Sea Trials in China: A New Era for Marine Exploration

The Douglas Mawson, a new expedition ship, has successfully completed its sea trials in China. Currently in the final stages of construction at China Merchants Heavy Industries in Hainan, it is scheduled for delivery to SunStone Ships later this year and will serve a year-round charter for Aurora Expeditions.

According to reports, the sea trials, overseen by the Nantong Maritime Safety Administration, focused on ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and efficiency standards. As part of SunStone’s Infinity class series, the ship can accommodate up to 249 individuals, including crew and guests. Weighing 8,076 tons, it is designed for a maximum speed of 15.5 knots and features a PC6 ice class hull, enabling it to navigate through polar regions safely.

The Douglas Mawson is the seventh vessel constructed for SunStone Ships at the Hainan facility following the 2023-built Ocean Albatros. Designed for upscale cruising in remote areas, the ship boasts features such as an X-Bow and a Safe Return to Port (SRtP) specification. Public areas include two dining rooms, an observation lounge, and a two-story, glass-enclosed main atrium.

Aurora Expeditions has plans for the vessel to commence its inaugural season in fall 2025, starting with voyages in Australia’s Tasmania region. The ship will provide expeditions to East Antarctica and the Red Sea, as well as exploring subantarctic islands, with departures from Hobart and Dunedin. In 2026, the Douglas Mawson is expected to reposition to Europe to offer itineraries throughout the Mediterranean, British Isles, and Western Europe.

Aurora Expeditions also manages two other vessels in the Infinity Class series, the Greg Mortimer and the Sylvia Earle.
