Explora Journeys and Fincantieri Celebrate Major Triple Milestone in Genoa

At Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard in Genoa, Explora Journeys recently commemorated three pivotal milestones in shipbuilding on July 14, 2025. The celebration marked the float-out of Explora III, the keel-laying of Explora IV, and the cutting of steel for Explora V. This event underscores the progress of a planned fleet of six units expected to be completed by 2028. To date, the first two vessels, Explora I and Explora II, are already operational and near full capacity.

Explora III will be the brand’s inaugural LNG-powered ship, set to launch in 2026, followed by Explora IV and Explora V in 2027, with Explora VI anticipated in 2028. Notably, the future vessels Explora IV and V are being equipped to accommodate emerging fuel cell technologies to convert LNG into hydrogen, aligning with Explora’s commitment to clean energy.

Anna Nash, the President of Explora Journeys, highlighted the integrated nature of the ceremonies, emphasizing their vision to transform ultra-elegant ocean travel. The event featured a traditional coin ceremony for Explora IV with a blessing from Caroline Cooney-Hurrell, recognized for her significant contributions to enhancing guest experiences, and Franca Parisi from Fincantieri who presided over the proceedings.

This expansion follows an investment of EUR 3.5 billion by the MSC Group into the fleet, enhancing Italian shipbuilding while supporting environmental initiatives. The new ships will incorporate modern technologies such as shore power connection, underwater noise reduction systems, and energy-efficient engines. Starting with Explora III, all new ships will use LNG propulsion, with capabilities to adapt to bio-LNG, synthetic LNG, and hydrogen fuel cells.
