The Spirit of the Moselle: SAGA UK’s Newest Riverboat Christened in Amsterdam

The UK-based SAGA Cruises celebrated the christening of its latest riverboat, the Spirit of the Moselle, in Amsterdam on June 30th, before its inaugural voyage. This vessel is the third purpose-built ship in Saga Group’s river fleet, following the Spirit of the Rhine and Spirit of the Danube. The ceremony highlighted both the ship and its connection to the picturesque Moselle River.

Louise Robinson, editor of Saga Magazine, served as the godmother of the ship, performing the traditional bottle-breaking ceremony while being surrounded by the ship’s captain, crew, and company leaders, including CEO Nigel Banks. She expressed her pride in being part of this significant occasion alongside the Saga cruise team.

The Spirit of the Moselle is 135 meters long and can accommodate 172 guests across its four decks, featuring 92 cabins – 73 of which come with French balconies. Onboard, there are two dining venues: the main Panorama Restaurant and the Beilstein Restaurant, designed to reflect the regional architecture and wine culture of the area.

Passenger comforts include a versatile lounge with a main bar, a Parisian-style café, and a library, alongside a splash pool on the sun deck.

After the christening ceremony, the boat embarked on an 8-day maiden voyage through the Dutch waterways and the Rhine, making stops at Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, and Cologne.

Looking ahead, future itineraries for the Spirit of the Moselle will feature routes through the Main River in the 2025 season, transitioning to the Moselle in 2026. The Moselle River flows from France through Luxembourg and Germany, eventually merging with the Rhine at Koblenz.

The ship’s design is inspired by the artwork of J. M. W. Turner and the lush landscapes of the Moselle Valley, which are reflected in the interior’s color palette and public spaces. Maintaining Saga’s tradition of an all-inclusive boutique river cruise experience, the Spirit of the Moselle also includes dining, beverages, excursions, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and chauffeur services, catering specifically to guests over 50 who seek comfortable and enriching travel experiences.
