Advocates Rally Against Detentions and Deportations of Cruise Ship Workers in Norfolk
Demonstrators rallied on July 20, 2025, in Norfolk to protest the detention and deportation of cruise ship employees, primarily Filipino workers, by federal authorities. Activists reported that since April, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), supported by Carnival Cruise Line security, had detained 21 crew members aboard the Carnival Sunshine, alleging they possessed child pornography.
Around 50 supporters gathered near Town Point Park to voice their concerns about the detentions, highlighting that many of those targeted were lower-ranking employees, such as cooks and custodians. Aquilina Soriano Versoza, Executive Director of the Pilipino Workers’ Center, argued that the arrests were unfounded, asserting that the detained individuals had been “falsely accused” and were not given proper legal due process.
Soriano Versoza alleged that the detentions were a strategic move to meet deportation quotas, a tactic reminiscent of previous rounds of enforcement from the Trump administration. Carnival Cruise Line stated they were merely cooperating with law enforcement, insisting that they take internet safety seriously and provide training for their staff.
Additionally, it was noted that those detained had no prior criminal records and had legitimate work visas. The Pilipino Workers Center organized the rally quickly after being alerted by crew members, illustrating the swift response to community concern.
Attendees voiced their fears for the broader Filipino immigrant community, reflecting on the stress and anxiety provoked by such aggressive enforcement actions. Local leaders emphasized the importance of dignity and rights for all, regardless of immigration status, amidst this unfolding situation.
