Technical Slowdown Causes Delay for Celebrity Beyond at PortMiami

An advisory issued to guests aboard the Celebrity Beyond has announced a one-day delay in their departure from PortMiami. This setback is due to a technical issue affecting the ship’s engine or propulsion system, which has constrained its cruising speed and altered its itinerary and disembarkation plans.

Cruise tracking indicates that the Celebrity Beyond is currently traveling at about 17 knots near Cuba—well below its typical cruising speed of 22 knots. Some passengers have speculated on social media that the vessel might be running on a single engine, though this has not been confirmed by Celebrity Cruises.

The ship, which was initially expected to leave at 4:00 p.m. on July 20, will now depart a day later, on July 21, with an expected arrival time at PortMiami Terminal C. As a result of the delay, the more than 3,200 guests will have an added day at sea before reaching Miami. To compensate for this inconvenience, the cruise line is providing onboard credits equivalent to one day’s fare, and will refund any pre-paid onshore packages for the missed day. Additionally, they will offer up to $250 per stateroom to assist with accommodation for the night of July 20.

This delay will also shorten the originally planned 7-night Eastern Caribbean voyage—scheduled to include stops in Nassau, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten—to a 6-night journey, which may require rescheduling or canceling at least one port visit.

Discussion among cruise enthusiasts suggests that the ship’s main generator engine, which provides around 25% of its power, could be undergoing a routine overhaul. This procedure, when performed at sea, typically results in a speed reduction of about 10% without creating safety concerns.
