Smithsonian Journeys Revives Mississippi River Cruises with Enriching Historic Commentary
Smithsonian Journeys is set to resume its Mississippi River cruises, marking its first foray into U.S. inland waterways since 2019 following a pandemic-induced hiatus. This new itinerary will partner with American Cruise Lines and feature a 9-day voyage on the American Splendor, traveling from Memphis to New Orleans in March 2026.
The cruise promises an enriching experience with onboard commentary by renowned historian and author Doris Kearns Goodwin, true to Smithsonian’s educational focus. Though currently limited to a single scheduled sailing, early indications show strong demand for reservations.
This initiative aligns with Smithsonian Journeys’ strategic expansion into river cruising, which also includes a variety of European cruises in collaboration with AmaWaterways, with over 30 departures planned for the next year featuring expert lecturers on each journey.
In addition to the Mississippi River offerings, Smithsonian Journeys is committed to expanding its cruise travel options, venturing into expedition cruising with a 2022 partnership with Ponant, alongside future trips planned in Canada, Peru, and a Nile River cruise in 2027, coinciding with a total solar eclipse.
