Santo Domingo Sets Its Sights on Homeport Status with New Cruise Terminal Development

The Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM), led by Jean Luis Rodríguez, is assessing the feasibility of a new cruise terminal in Santo Domingo. This proposed terminal is strategically located along the Malecón near the Jaragua Hotel, aiming to handle passenger embarks and disembarks directly in the capital. This development is intended to reduce reliance on traditional cruise ports like Miami or San Juan, positioning Santo Domingo as a significant homeport for international cruises.

Rodríguez highlighted that the initiative is part of a larger expansion of port infrastructure. Existing terminals in Amber Cove, Taíno Bay, Cabo Rojo, and La Romana have already contributed to the Dominican Republic’s growing reputation as a Caribbean cruise destination. The new terminal would establish a more direct connection for cruise passengers to the historic Colonial Zone, enhancing visitor experience while boosting local tourism.

Estimated to cost around $400 million, the terminal is slated for completion before 2028. While the legal aspects of the proposal are still under review, the project is deemed a national development priority. Other planned terminal expansions in Samaná, Arroyo Barril, and Barahona are already either under construction or scheduled for completion soon, with strong collaboration between public and private sectors under APORDOM’s guidance.
