Pandemonium in Slovenia: Huge Cruise Ships Create Chaos in Quaint City
The small Slovenian coastal city of Koper, known as a hidden gem of the Adriatic, is currently facing a surge in tourism as massive cruise ships dock at its shores. This increase has sparked debate among residents about the economic benefits versus the disruption caused to their community.
Koper, which has a population of around 25,000 and features a quaint medieval old town, welcomed 73 cruise ships in 2024, bringing over 125,000 passengers, a notable 4% increase from the previous year. In contrast, cruise traffic at other Slovenian ports has decreased by 7%, indicating that Koper is shouldering nearly all of the country’s cruise tourism influx.
To accommodate the rising number of tourists, the city opened a new cruise terminal in May 2025, designed with sustainability in mind. It features energy-efficient systems and aims to connect cruise tourism with local community needs. However, local businesses and residents reported an immediate increase in congestion and frustrations soon after the terminal’s launch.
Cruise trends suggest that this demand will not ease, with projections indicating a 10% rise in global cruise tourism by 2028. Some European cities, like Amsterdam and Dubrovnik, have reacted to cruise ship overcrowding by increasing port fees or outright banning large vessels from their historic centers.
Critics argue that while cruise companies profit from the influx, local towns often don’t see the same benefit, especially when tourists do not stay long or spend significantly. One visitor noted on Reddit that many attractions seemed closed during their visit, leading to a brief stop before returning to their ship without fully experiencing what Koper has to offer.
As the debate continues, Koper faces the challenge of balancing economic opportunities with maintaining the integrity and charm of its community.
