HAWAII, USA — On Tuesday, shortly after a tsunami warning was issued in Hilo, Hawaii, the Pride of America cruise ship departed the port two hours earlier than scheduled, leaving hundreds of passengers behind.

A frantic situation unfolded as passengers who were on excursions received emergency alerts on their phones. One Florida family barely made it back aboard the ship, recounting the chaotic scene. "We were one of the last passengers to board before the plank lifted. I think about a quarter of the passengers couldn’t make it back in time," one family member, Raleigh, stated.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has not disclosed the exact number of passengers left behind but explained that the ship needed to depart urgently due to the tsunami threat. "We left the dock around 5 PM as the tsunami was expected at 7:10 PM. For the ship, being at sea is the safest option," Raleigh commented, noting that the passengers evacuated were taken to a local high school, where they were safe and provided with refreshments.

When the ship returned the following day, a joyful reunion occurred as waiting passengers greeted their fellow travelers with cheers and applause as they boarded the ship.

In a statement, Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed their actions were in alignment with local emergency procedures. They emphasized the safety priority for guests and crew during the situation:

"On July 29, 2025, the State of Hawaii declared a state of emergency due to an 8.8-magnitude earthquake, which necessitated an immediate departure from Hilo. Shortly before leaving, we notified all guests and advised those unable to return to seek higher ground. We have remained at sea until conditions improved."

The situation has since stabilized, with the tsunami warning lifted and the port gradually reopening, pending safety assessments.
