Environmental Protests Cause Delays for Celebrity Eclipse’s Docking in Port Amsterdam
On the morning of August 3, 2025, the cruise ship Celebrity Eclipse faced a delay while docking at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam due to a protest by around 30 members of Extinction Rebellion. The activists, using kayaks and inflatable boats, obstructed access to the terminal, displaying banners that highlighted the cruise industry’s environmental impact. The protest commenced at approximately 6:00 a.m. and lasted for two hours until law enforcement arrested at least five individuals to restore order.
While this disruption was temporary and the ship was allowed to dock eventually, it highlighted the mounting tensions regarding cruise tourism in Amsterdam. Extinction Rebellion emphasized that the demonstration was part of a larger effort to halt cruise ship visits in Amsterdam and throughout the Netherlands, citing serious concerns over emissions and the effects of overtourism on local communities.
In response to such concerns, the city of Amsterdam has begun implementing stricter regulations on the cruise industry, currently capping ship calls to 100 per year and planning to move the cruise terminal away from the city center. By 2027, all visiting ships will be required to have shore power capabilities. Although cruise tourists constitute a minor segment of overall visitors, the cruise industry remains a central focus in ongoing discussions about sustainability and urban development in the region.
