Hamburg: Leading the Way in Shore Power Supply for Cruise Ships in the EU

The Port of Hamburg, Germany, is leading the way in maritime decarbonization by implementing advanced shore power facilities for cruise ships, well ahead of European Union regulations. Since 2024, the port has been supplying green electricity at its Cruise Terminals Altona and Steinwerder, allowing vessels at berth to connect to a clean energy source.

By 2026, all cruise terminals in Hamburg, including the HafenCity terminal currently in its testing phase, will be equipped with shore power capabilities. Agreements have been established with several major cruise lines—such as AIDA, MSC, TUI, Norwegian Cruise Line, Phoenix Reisen, and Fred Olsen—to facilitate this connection for docked ships.

Starting in 2027, any cruise ship that can use shore power will be required to plug into the port’s electrical grid during its visit, significantly ahead of the EU’s mandatory regulations set to take effect in 2030. The shore power infrastructure at Hamburg provides electricity at a voltage of 10 kV and can cater to different ships with capacities ranging from 12 to 16 MVA. This system is supplemented by specialized cable-tracking vehicles that adapt to tidal changes and varying ship configurations.

Hamburg’s initiative aims to not only mitigate emissions, noise, and air pollution from vessels while docked but also to contribute to its goal of carbon neutrality by 2040. By promoting the adoption of shore power, Hamburg exemplifies how integrating clean energy solutions can occur alongside maintaining efficient port operations.

The successful implementation of shore power in Hamburg serves as a model for sustainable maritime practices, offering tangible environmental advantages and a framework for regulatory compliance that other European ports are beginning to emulate.
