Hamburg: The EU’s Pioneer in Shore Power Supply for Cruise Ships

The Port of Hamburg in Germany is making significant strides in maritime decarbonization by leading the European Union in providing shore power for cruise ships. The port has already established shore electricity capabilities at its Cruise Terminals Altona and Steinwerder, allowing vessels to utilize green electricity while they are docked.

By 2026, all cruise terminals in Hamburg, including HafenCity, which is currently in trial commissioning, will be equipped to deliver shore power. This infrastructure supports a commitment to carbon neutrality by 2040 and aims to reduce emissions, noise, and air pollution from vessels at berth.

The Hamburg Port Authority has collaborated with major cruise companies, including AIDA, MSC, TUI, NCL-Norwegian, Phoenix Reisen, and Fred Olsen, ensuring that ships are supplied with shore power during their stays. Beginning in 2027, all cruise ships with shore-power capabilities will be required to connect to the port’s power grid, ahead of the EU’s mandatory regulations set to take effect in 2030.

The shore power systems operate at 10 kV with capacities between 12 to 16 MVA, accommodating various ship configurations through adaptive cable-tracking vehicles.
