Clashes Erupt at Port of Volos as Protests Target Israeli Cruise Ship

Riot police intervened during demonstrations in the Greek port city of Volos as pro-Palestinian activists protested against the arrival of the Israeli-operated cruise ship, Crown Iris. This incident occurred amidst a series of disruptions at Greek ports due to rising opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

On August 13th, activists gathered at the port, displaying large Palestinian flags and expressing solidarity with Gaza as passengers disembarked. Authorities deployed stun grenades to disperse the protesters, yet the Israeli tourists continued their planned excursions to Mount Pilio and the Meteora monasteries. After being removed from the port area, the demonstrators marched through the city center.

The Crown Iris has faced previous disruptions, including an early departure from Syros last month due to protests that blocked passenger disembarkation. Activists have criticized Greece for welcoming Israeli tourists amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza. In contrast, some Greek officials, including Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, condemned the protests, labeling them as unwelcoming and inconsistent with the nation’s values.

Concerns from Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, regarding the protests’ impact on tourism have emerged, especially considering Greece’s popularity among Israeli travelers. Despite the tensions, the Crown Iris continues its voyage along the Greek coast.
