San Juan Secures Its Position as a Premier Mega-Ship Port with $10M Pier Upgrade

San Juan Cruise Port has reinforced its reputation as a prominent destination for large cruise ships with a recent $10 million infrastructure upgrade at Pier 3. This enhancement, carried out by the San Juan Cruise Port (SJCP), features improvements that allow for the docking of the Wonder of the Seas, the first Oasis-class vessel to utilize the upgraded pier, with plans for future Icon-class ship visits.

The arrival of Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, which accommodates 6,500 passengers, contributed approximately $700,000 to Old San Juan’s local economy in just one day. Over the next five months, around 15 additional mega-ships are expected to call at the port, leading to increased business for local retailers, tour operators, and transportation services.

The pier upgrades are part of a larger $52 million initiative aimed at enhancing San Juan’s capabilities as both a homeport and port of call. Engineering studies have confirmed that Pier 3 can now accommodate vessels over 200,000 gross tons, with dredging completed to support deeper drafts. Other enhancements include reinforced bollards, improved mooring dolphins, and a new docking platform designed specifically for the upcoming Icon-class ships.

Clarivette Díaz, General Manager of SJCP, highlighted that these developments are essential for San Juan to maintain its competitive position in the Caribbean cruise market.
