Carnival Adventure Sets Sail to Revitalize Port Vila Following Earthquake Recovery

Vanuatu has rejoiced in the return of cruise tourism as the Carnival Adventure docked at Port Vila on August 8, 2025. This visit marked the first cruise ship arrival in eight months, following the devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on December 17, 2024. The earthquake caused significant damage to Port Vila’s infrastructure and cruise facilities.

The Carnival Adventure is part of a 10-night South Pacific itinerary that started in Sydney, NSW, with planned stops at Mystery Island, Lifou, and Nouméa, allowing passengers to enjoy the region’s natural beauty.

Upon arrival, the Carnival Adventure was welcomed with a ceremony that showcased traditional dance and the exchange of a commemorative plaque, symbolizing the revival of cruise activity in the area. Due to the ongoing repairs at Port Vila’s main docking facilities, Carnival instituted a temporary tendering service to transport guests ashore, ensuring a dignified experience despite the infrastructure challenges.

In addition to helping visitors return, Carnival Cruise Line has contributed $60,000 to local first responder organizations and is collaborating with Vanuatu’s disaster management agencies to support recovery efforts.

The Carnival Adventure is scheduled for more visits to Port Vila through late 2025, with additional stops from sister ships like the Carnival Encounter and Carnival Splendor. The repositioned Carnival Luminosa is also expected in late December, reinforcing Carnival’s dedication to rejuvenating tourism in Vanuatu.

Other major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Oceania, Costa, Holland America, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, and Crystal Cruises, are also expected to support the resurgence of the cruise industry in Vanuatu throughout 2025.
