Royal Caribbean Names Astronaut Kellie Gerardi as Godmother of the Star OTS

Royal Caribbean has appointed astronaut Kellie Gerardi as the Godmother of its newest vessel, Star of the Seas. This announcement was made by Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean, aboard the ship. Gerardi takes over the role from singer Diana Ross, who was unable to fulfill the honor due to unforeseen circumstances.

The decision to choose Gerardi was influenced by the adventurous spirit of the Star of the Seas, with Bayley highlighting the importance of selecting a Godmother who embodies exploration. He also emphasized the significance of maintaining the tradition of having a woman in this role. Gerardi, who represents both professional achievement and an inspiring public persona, is known for her position as Payload Specialist for Virgin Galactic and Director of Human Spaceflight Operations at the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences. In 2023, she became the 90th woman to travel to space.

Beyond her qualifications in spaceflight, Gerardi has authored two children’s books and boasts a social media following of over one million. Recent recognitions include being named a 2025 Woman of the Year by USA Today and earning a Webby Award.

Gerardi will officially christen the Star of the Seas during its inaugural voyage on August 20th from Port Canaveral, Florida. The ship, which is part of the Icon class following the Icon of the Seas—previously named by football star Lionel Messi—will offer 7-night itineraries through the Eastern and Western Caribbean, including stops at Royal Caribbean’s private destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay.
