Tragic Drownings: Two Carnival Cruise Tourists Lose Lives at Celebration Key, Bahamas

Less than a month after its grand opening, Carnival Cruise Line’s private resort, Celebration Key in the Bahamas, experienced two tragic drownings on August 15, 2025. The incidents happened during a single afternoon, raising serious concerns about water safety at the resort.

The first incident occurred around noon when a 79-year-old American man snorkeling near the beach became unresponsive. Despite immediate first aid and CPR from medical personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Several hours later, a 74-year-old American woman was found unresponsive in a swimming pool. Like the first victim, she did not survive despite prompt medical response.

Carnival confirmed that lifeguards and medical teams were present and responded to both emergencies. The two individuals were guests aboard different Carnival ships: one traveled on the Mardi Gras, departing from Port Canaveral, while the other was on the Carnival Elation, leaving from Jacksonville.

The cruise line expressed condolences and stated that their Care Team is offering support to the affected families. The Royal Bahamas Police Force is investigating both cases and has ordered autopsies to officially determine the causes of death.

Celebration Key opened on July 19, featuring significant amenities such as expansive freshwater lagoons, an infinity pool, swim-up bars, and various recreational activities designed to provide a luxurious cruise experience.
