Azamara Launches a New Era in Destination Immersion Travel

Azamara Cruises, famed for its Destination Immersion approach and numerous late-night and overnight port stays, has announced an exciting new initiative called "Discover What the Locals Know." This program is tailored to provide guests with authentic experiences, allowing them to engage with destinations in a way that mirrors local life.

Dondra Ritzenthaler, CEO of Azamara, pointed out that modern travelers are looking for deeper connections rather than just surface-level sightseeing. They want to share meals with locals, partake in regional traditions, and savor everyday moments that resonate with the culture. The new program aims to meet these desires, offering experiences such as peaceful strolls along Gythion’s waterfront or immersive explorations of the hillside village of Sirince in Turkey.

The first phase of this initiative will take place during Azamara’s 2026-2027 Mediterranean season, featuring voyages that span autumn through spring. Travelers can expect small-group excursions led by local hosts, exclusive access to film festivals, artisan workshops, and culinary experiences grounded in local traditions. Certain itineraries will also allow guests to visit popular cities during off-peak hours, ensuring a more personal exploration.

In staying true to its tradition, Azamara will maintain extended port calls, encouraging guests to partake in seasonal customs and local festivities. This includes vibrant winter markets where travelers can engage with handcrafted goods and community celebrations away from the hustle of peak season tourism.

Highlights include evenings in Florence at historic cinemas during the Festival dei Popoli, day trips in Catania celebrating musician Vincenzo Bellini with citywide music events, and a special double overnight in Seville coinciding with the city’s European Film Festival. Guests visiting Santa Margherita will be able to join locals for olive harvest tastings at family-run mills, and the Christmas voyage will showcase festive markets in Florence, Mahon, and Palma filled with crafts and seasonal delights.

Through "Discover What the Locals Know," Azamara is rethinking the cruise experience by prioritizing authenticity and a more leisurely pace, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the cultural essence of their destinations.
