Toulon, France Leads the Way in Shore Power Implementation for Cruise Ships

In Toulon, France, a significant step toward sustainable cruising has been taken with the introduction of a cutting-edge shore power system. This innovative infrastructure allows ships from Virgin Voyages and Oceania Cruises to connect to a power supply that combines local grid electricity, solar power, and battery storage through advanced smart grid technology. Developed by ABB in collaboration with Eiffage Construction and Fauché, and overseen by the Métropole Toulon Provence Méditerranée and the Var Chamber of Commerce, this system can service vessels up to 290 meters long.

The port now boasts three quays outfitted for shore power connections, enabling concurrent supply to cruise ships and ferries. The implementation of this system significantly mitigates emissions, noise, and reliance on onboard diesel generators, aligning with forthcoming environmental regulations such as FuelEU Maritime.

Toulon is also prioritizing berth access for cruise ships that can utilize shore power as part of an initiative to meet increasing environmental standards and community expectations. Additionally, the Var Chamber has launched a Green Bay environmental certification for passenger terminals, highlighting the region’s commitment to sustainability.

Looking ahead, by 2028, it is anticipated that most of the CLIA ocean-going fleet will have shore power capabilities, marking a pivotal transition toward eco-friendly port operations and contributing to the broader objectives of the cruise industry regarding environmental stewardship.
