MSC World Europa Faces Electrical Breakdown Off the Italian Coast: What Happened?
The Malta-flagged cruise ship MSC World Europa encountered a technical failure while sailing through the Tyrrhenian Sea, on its way from Genoa to Naples. The incident occurred around 07:25 a.m. when the vessel reported an electrical issue that impacted its engines. At that time, it was located approximately 8 nautical miles (about 15 km or 9 miles) southwest of Ponza Island, situated between Rome and Naples.
There were 8,585 individuals onboard, which included nearly 6,500 passengers and over 2,000 crew members. The Italian Coast Guard confirmed that the ship was stable, with favorable weather and sea conditions. Auxiliary generators were providing electrical supply for essential services.
In response to the situation, two tugboats were dispatched to facilitate the towing of the vessel to Naples. Additionally, technical specialists were expected to board the ship to assess the malfunctioning systems. As a precaution, the Coast Guard deployed two patrol boats and a helicopter to oversee the operation, with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at Civitavecchia maintaining continuous monitoring.
