Tragedy at Sea: 27-Year-Old Galley Steward Falls Overboard from the Sun Princess in the Dardanelles Strait
A tragic incident occurred on August 20, 2025, involving a 27-year-old Galley Steward from Kenya aboard the Sun Princess who fell overboard in the Dardanelles Strait. The incident came to light during a review of the ship’s CCTV footage, prompting the captain and crew to activate emergency protocols immediately.
Search efforts ensued, with multiple boats deployed by the ship and local maritime rescue authorities scouring the waters for hours. Sadly, despite these extensive efforts, the crew member remains missing.
Following the overboard incident, the ship was directed to stay near Tekirdag, Turkey, to allow local officials to conduct their investigation. This led to a delay in the vessel’s arrival in Istanbul on August 21 and resulted in the cancellation of the planned visit to Mykonos on August 22, with all pre-booked excursions being refunded.
In a heartfelt communication to the passengers, the captain expressed deep sorrow over the incident and reiterated the priority placed on the safety and well-being of both guests and crew members. To offer support during this difficult time, Princess Cruises’ Family Assistance team has reached out to the steward’s family, while specially trained counselors have been made available aboard the ship to assist anyone affected.
