Two Passengers Fall Overboard on BC Ferries: A Day of Consecutive Incidents

On September 4, 2025, a passenger fell overboard from the Spirit of British Columbia ferry during its evening crossing from Swartz Bay (Victoria) to Tsawwassen (Vancouver). This incident occurred east of Active Pass, a narrow channel in the region. Notably, this was the second instance of a passenger going overboard on the same route within just two days.

BC Ferries, the ship operator, confirmed that a rescue boat was dispatched, successfully recovering the individual and transferring them to a Canadian Coast Guard vessel. The day before, another passenger had also entered the water while trying to retrieve clothing near the Tsawwassen terminal.

Eric McNeely, president of the BC Ferry & Marine Workers’ Union, highlighted that while such occurrences are already rare, having two within as many days is particularly unusual. Investigations are currently underway for both incidents. The ferry service warned that entering the water intentionally presents significant risks and may lead to severe consequences, including fines or other legal actions.
