Keel Laid for Viking Libra: The First Hydrogen-Powered Ship in Viking OCEAN’s Fleet

Viking Ocean Cruises has marked a significant milestone in its fleet development by laying the keel for its first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra, at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy. This innovative vessel is designed to operate with zero emissions, making it suitable for transit in environmentally sensitive areas.

The Viking Libra will boast an estimated gross tonnage of around 54,300 and feature 499 staterooms for approximately 998 guests. Its propulsion system will utilize hydrogen fuel cells, generating up to 6 megawatts, with a strong focus on sustainability throughout its design and operation.

Set to embark on its maiden voyage on December 3, 2026, from Piraeus-Athens, the Viking Libra will embark on a ten-night “Greek Odyssey” that includes stops at several notable ports: Volos, Thessaloniki, Kusadasi, Rhodes, Santorini, Chania, and Nafplio. Following its Mediterranean debut, the ship is expected to transition for itineraries in Northern Europe starting in early 2027.

Viking considers the Libra a flagship example of its commitment to decarbonization, which will also include the delivery of its sister ship, the Viking Astrea, featuring similar hydrogen propulsion technologies, scheduled for 2027.
