Port of San Diego Achieves Milestone in Clean Air Strategy Initiatives

The Port of San Diego has reported notable advancements in its Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS), achieving significant reductions in emissions tied to maritime activities. Since the last air inventory conducted in 2019, there has been a 46% reduction in diesel particulate matter, a 32% decrease in nitrogen oxides, and a 10% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

To support these initiatives, the Port and its partners have committed over $227 million towards maritime electrification and efficiency projects. This investment has been directed towards the procurement of electric equipment, improvements to port facilities at cargo and cruise terminals, and the development of cleaner freight operations.

The success of the MCAS initiatives has allowed the port to meet 80% of its operational objectives, positioning it favorably to attract additional funding. Recently, the port secured a $58.6 million grant from the EPA, which includes a $27.7 million match, totaling $86.3 million. This grant will facilitate further advancements, including the installation of shore power for commercial harbor craft and oceangoing vessels, and the acquisition of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks and cargo handling equipment.
