AIDA Leads Fuel Transition: 3,300 Tons of Bio-LNG and Embracing Shore Power

In the first half of 2025, AIDA Cruises made significant strides toward sustainability by using over 3,300 tonnes of ISCC EU-certified bio-LNG on their ship, AIDAnova, with fuel supplied at key ports including Hamburg, Kiel, and Zeebrugge. Furthermore, AIDA has established more than 250 shore-power connections across its fleet, which they aim to increase to over 400 by the end of the year.

These initiatives are part of AIDA’s “Evolution” program, aimed at decarbonization and modernization. Future vessels being constructed for delivery in spring 2030 and winter 2031-32 are designed for multi-fuel propulsion, capable of utilizing bio-fuels and e-fuels as they become more accessible.

The company has also tested low-emission biofuels. In 2024, AIDAprima successfully used 100% residual biofuel (BMF 100), achieving a reported emission reduction of over 90% in CO₂ under specific conditions.

Shore power connections have become integral to AIDA’s operations, with their fleet making 381 connections in European ports in 2024, a substantial increase from just 65 in 2023. This includes efforts in ports across Germany, as well as in Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen, allowing ships to power onboard systems using local electricity rather than running their engines, thereby reducing emissions by up to 98% depending on the energy mix available.

AIDA is also enhancing energy efficiency throughout its fleet. AIDAprima features a 10 MWh battery storage system that helps stabilize engine loads and reduce fuel consumption during peak demand. Investments continue in various technologies such as air conditioning, refrigeration, waste heat recovery, LED lighting, and the application of data analytics and AI for optimizing energy usage.

These technical improvements, alongside their progressive fuel sourcing and shore power utilization, reflect AIDA’s commitment to aligning with climate goals set by the EU and IMO and supporting their own target for net-zero emissions.
