Royal Caribbean Group Expands Future Fleet Plans: Meyer Turku Shipyard Capacity Secured Through 2036
Royal Caribbean Group (RCG) has established a long-term framework agreement with the Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku, ensuring the right to commission new vessels at the facility until 2036. As part of this agreement, RCG confirmed its order for the Icon 5 cruise ship, which is scheduled for delivery in 2028, pending the acquisition of appropriate financing. Additionally, RCG holds an option for another vessel, Icon 7, while an earlier option for Icon 6 has already been announced.
Meyer Turku has previously delivered two ICON-class vessels to Royal Caribbean: the Icon of the Seas, which entered service in January 2024, and the Star of the Seas, set to launch in August 2025. The upcoming Legend of the Seas is scheduled to sail in Summer 2026, with Icon 4 expected to be delivered in 2027.
This agreement significantly benefits Meyer Turku, which has built 25 ships for RCG since the mid-1990s, as it ensures a steady workflow for ICON-class construction projects over the next decade, generating an estimated billion euros annually for the Finnish economy.
Royal Caribbean has indicated that further orders beyond Icon 5 will rely on the company exercising its options and completing firm construction contracts that will be subject to standard conditions, including financing.
Senior leadership at Royal Caribbean has expressed confidence that this agreement positions the company for a "new, game-changing class of ship beyond Icon." Meanwhile, Meyer Turku’s chief executive highlighted the agreement as a point of pride for their team and for Finnish craftsmanship in shipbuilding.
