Driving the Future: AIDA’s Commitment to Sustainable Fuel Transition with 3,300 Tons of Bio-LNG and Increased Shore Power Utilization

In the first half of 2025, AIDA Cruises made significant strides in its efforts to transition to sustainable fuels, utilizing over 3,300 tonnes of ISCC EU-certified bio-LNG aboard the AIDAnova. Fuel deliveries were made at key ports including Hamburg, Kiel, and Zeebrugge.

By the end of August 2025, AIDA achieved over 250 shore-power connections across its fleet, with projections to exceed 400 by year’s end. This initiative is part of AIDA’s comprehensive “Evolution” program aimed at decarbonization and fleet modernization, also encompassing the construction of new vessels expected to be launched in spring 2030 and winter 2031-32. These upcoming ships will be designed for multi-fuel propulsion, allowing them to utilize both bio-fuels and e-fuels when they become more available.

Furthermore, AIDA has been testing very low-emission biofuels; in 2024, AIDAprima operated successfully on 100% residual biofuel (BMF 100), yielding an impressive 90% reduction in CO₂ emissions under test conditions.

Shore power is a cornerstone of AIDA’s operations, which logged 381 connections in European ports during 2024, a significant increase from 65 in 2023. Key ports equipped for shore power include Hamburg, Kiel, Warnemünde, along with Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen. This technology allows AIDA ships to turn off main engines upon docking and use port electricity, potentially reducing emissions by up to 98% depending on local energy sources and infrastructure.

In addition to these advancements, AIDAprima utilizes a 10 MWh battery storage system to stabilize engine loads and lower fuel consumption during peak demand times. Continuous investment is being made across the fleet for enhancements such as improved air conditioning, refrigeration, waste heat recovery, LED lighting, and employing data analytics and AI for optimizing energy usage.
