Cruise Companies Adjust Caribbean Itineraries Due to Tropical Storm Humberto

Major cruise lines have recently updated their Caribbean itineraries due to Tropical Storm Humberto, which has strengthened into a hurricane northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. The National Hurricane Center indicated on September 26 that Humberto is expected to achieve major hurricane status within 24 to 48 hours. Furthermore, a tropical wave near Hispaniola, Turks and Caicos, and eastern Cuba is anticipated to move toward the Bahamas, where it could develop into a tropical depression. Already, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Turks and Caicos Islands are experiencing heavy rain and strong winds, with the adverse conditions expected to expand into the Bahamas and eastern Cuba soon.

Carnival Cruise Line has announced several modifications to its sailing schedule. The Carnival Venezia, which set sail from New York on September 22, has canceled its scheduled stop at Grand Turk on September 28. In its place, the ship will extend its visit in San Juan, Puerto Rico, by two hours on September 27. Similarly, the Carnival Sunrise, which departed Miami on September 25, is moving its stop at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas to one day earlier. Carnival stated that safety was the priority for these changes, made in consultation with the National Hurricane Center, the U.S. Coast Guard, and local port authorities.

Royal Caribbean International has also adjusted multiple routes in response to the storm. The Star of the Seas will now follow a Western Caribbean itinerary, with stops planned at Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico and Roatan, Honduras, instead of its originally intended Eastern Caribbean program starting September 28. Liberty of the Seas has changed its scheduled Bermuda stop to St. John, New Brunswick, and Freedom of the Seas has replaced its Grand Turk stop with a visit to Cozumel on September 25. The Royal Caribbean Group cited meteorological evaluations as the basis for these alterations and directly notified passengers of the changes.

Disney Cruise Line made similar adjustments, with the Disney Wish canceling its planned September 27 visit to Nassau and moving its visit to its private island, Castaway Cay, one day earlier, with September 28 designated as a day at sea.
