Holyhead Emerges as the Key Port for Wales’ Surge in Cruise Shipping Traffic
Wales experienced a remarkable surge in cruise ship visits in 2025, with a total of 84 ships docking in its ports. This figure represents a more than 100% increase from the 41 visits recorded in 2021, highlighting Wales’ growing appeal as a cruise destination.
Among its five cruise-capable ports—Cardiff, Swansea, Milford Haven, Fishguard, and Holyhead—Holyhead emerged as the primary hub, accommodating 55 out of the 84 cruise ships. The port’s well-developed infrastructure allows it to berth vessels up to 300 meters long, and a tendering system is in place for larger ships that cannot dock, ensuring passengers can still access the port.
The tourism sector in Wales already contributes approximately GBP 3.8 billion to the economy each year. The influx of cruise visitors further supports local economies by enhancing spending in coastal communities, hospitality, retail, and cultural attractions.
Wales’ allure for cruise operators and tourists stems from its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and a network of ports that provide easy access to diverse experiences. Visitors can explore ancient castles, natural beauty, and vibrant towns, all located within proximity to the sea.
