Severe Storms Cause Delays for Four Cruise Ships in New York Harbor
Four cruise ships in New York faced delays due to a low-pressure system impacting the east coast over the weekend. The ships, operated by MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, and Hapag-Lloyd, were unable to depart after docking earlier.
The Royal Caribbean ship, Symphony of the Seas, was particularly affected, spending three days docked in Cape Liberty after its arrival on Sunday. Originally scheduled for a seven-night cruise to the Bahamas, it had to delay its departure until Tuesday morning due to the closed port caused by adverse weather conditions. The revised itinerary resulted in skipped visits to Port Canaveral and Nassau, although the ship was able to set sail for Perfect Day at CocoCay.
Royal Caribbean communicated with its passengers about the situation, assuring them of ongoing monitoring and adjustments. To compensate for the inconvenience, the company offered a 50% discount on drinks and a $35 non-refundable onboard credit to those with beverage packages. Additionally, they provided a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) equivalent to two days’ worth of the cruise fare for use on future sailings before October 12, 2026.
Other affected vessels included the Norwegian Getaway and MSC Meraviglia, both of which faced a two-day delay in their planned weeklong cruises departing from New York City. Meanwhile, Hapag-Lloyd’s Europa also postponed its trans-Atlantic crossing to Europe.
