Stena Line Unveils Stena Connecta: Its New Methanol-Ready Hybrid Vessel
Swedish ferry operator Stena Line recently held the naming ceremony for its new hybrid Ro-Ro vessel, Stena Connecta, at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai on October 16, 2025. This vessel, designed for the Belfast–Heysham route, is set to commence regular service in January 2026. It is a sister ship to the Stena Futura, which began service in September 2025. Collectively, these vessels aim to enhance freight capacity on the route by approximately 40%.
Stena Connecta is 147 meters long and offers around 2,848 lanemetres of freight capacity. Its multi-hybrid propulsion system allows operation on battery power, bio-fuel, and methanol. Furthermore, it features Norsepower Rotor Sails, which can provide up to 9% fuel savings during operations across the Irish Sea.
Chief Executive Officer of Stena Line, Niclas Mårtensson, emphasized that these new vessels showcase advanced maritime technology and are pivotal for sustaining transportation links between Ireland and the UK, while also contributing to Stena Line’s goal of reducing CO₂ emissions by 30% by 2030.
