Aurora Expeditions Harnesses AI-Powered Navigation for Sustainable Polar Operations
Aurora Expeditions is collaborating with the Australian climate-technology firm CounterCurrent to implement an AI-powered navigation system on its new vessel, the Douglas Mawson, which is set to launch in December 2025. This initiative aims to enhance safety and environmental performance in polar navigation.
During the 2025–2026 Antarctic season, the Douglas Mawson will be equipped with a CounterCurrent sensor that will provide live data on wind, wave, and current conditions in the remote Southern Ocean. This real-time data will contribute to global weather and oceanographic models, improving forecasting accuracy and enabling lower-emission routing for the maritime industry.
Aurora Expeditions emphasizes that this collaboration, alongside contributions from the Polar Citizen Science Collective, aims to fill the gap in real-time oceanic data from polar regions. By sharing the data collected during its voyages, the company seeks to promote safer and more sustainable operations at sea.
The AI technology developed by CounterCurrent utilizes onboard instruments and satellite analysis to provide vessel-specific routing recommendations, optimizing fuel consumption by aligning ship courses with natural currents. This advancement is expected to decrease emissions and enhance operational safety in complex polar environments.
This partnership aligns with Aurora’s broader sustainability initiatives, which include various projects with Seawilding, Veritree, and Clean Hub, as well as citizen-science collaborations with organizations like HappyWhale, FjordPhyto, and NASA Globe Cloud.
