HX Expeditions Unveils Electric ‘Silent Science Boats’ for Sustainable Polar Research
HX Expeditions has announced the launch of two new fully electric “silent science boats,” aimed at minimizing underwater noise pollution and bolstering low-impact research in the polar regions. These MK 5 models are fitted with RAD Propulsion’s RAD 40 drive system, which allows for near-silent operation, significantly reducing disturbance to marine life.
These innovative vessels will be used on the MS Fram and the hybrid-powered MS Fridtjof Nansen, both of which operate in Arctic and Antarctic waters. Their primary role is to support HX’s onboard scientific teams and guest researchers in various oceanographic, wildlife, and biodiversity studies. This initiative is part of HX’s comprehensive strategy to phase out petroleum-based engines and encourage sustainable exploration practices.
Scientific leaders at HX emphasized the importance of addressing underwater sound pollution, which is a major yet often neglected environmental threat to polar ecosystems. By lowering noise levels in sensitive habitats populated by whales and other marine species, the new boats are expected to allow for more unobtrusive research and observation.
Constructed to meet the safety and environmental standards set by the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), these vessels align with HX’s long-term goals of transitioning to quieter, less polluting operations across its fleet.
The company believes these silent science boats will enhance opportunities for researchers and guests to engage in studies and wildlife observations with minimal acoustic disruption, ushering in a new era of responsible exploration and data collection in some of the planet’s most delicate ecosystems.
