Royal Caribbean Group’s Galveston Cruise Terminal Earns Dual LEED Net Zero Certifications
Royal Caribbean Group’s Galveston Cruise Terminal has made history by becoming the first cruise facility to earn dual LEED Net Zero Energy and LEED Net Zero Carbon certifications. These prestigious recognitions from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) build upon the terminal’s previous LEED Gold certification received for its design and construction when it opened in November 2022.
Joshua Carroll, RCG’s senior vice president of Destination Development, highlighted that this achievement reflects the company’s strong commitment to responsible operations. He pointed out the collaborative efforts among RCG, terminal operator SSA Marine, sustainability consultants CodeGreen, and the Port of Galveston, which enabled the terminal to reach this significant milestone within just three years of its opening.
The LEED standard is internationally recognized for sustainable building practices. The LEED Zero Carbon certification indicates that a facility maintains net zero carbon emissions over the course of a year, while LEED Zero Energy certification recognizes facilities that balance energy consumption with renewable energy production for the same time frame.
Peter Templeton, President and CEO of USGBC, remarked that this accomplishment signifies more than merely following sustainable practices; it represents a commitment to advancing climate responsibility in both maritime and port sectors.
The certification process included a comprehensive audit of the terminal’s energy, water, and waste usage, conducted by CodeGreen. Based on this analysis, SSA Marine implemented various system improvements and efficiency upgrades to enhance operational performance. The lengthy review concluded in March 2025, and the terminal officially received its certifications on June 18 of that same year.
To commemorate this achievement, a plaque has been placed in the terminal’s main lobby, signifying Royal Caribbean Group’s ongoing commitment to environmentally responsible cruise operations and port infrastructure development.
