Aurora Expeditions Leverages AI Navigation for Sustainable Polar Exploration
Aurora Expeditions is partnering with Australian climate-technology firm CounterCurrent to implement an AI-powered navigation system on its upcoming ship, the Douglas Mawson, scheduled to launch in December 2025. This collaboration represents a significant advancement in utilizing sophisticated data technology to enhance safety and environmental performance during polar navigation.
During the 2025–2026 Antarctic season, the Douglas Mawson will be equipped with a CounterCurrent sensor. This sensor will collect real-time data on wind, wave, and current conditions in the remote Southern Ocean, contributing valuable information to global weather and oceanographic models. The aim is to improve forecasting accuracy and enable more efficient, lower-emission routing across the maritime industry.
Aurora Expeditions highlights that this partnership with CounterCurrent and the Polar Citizen Science Collective is essential for addressing the limited availability of real-time oceanic data from polar regions. By sharing the data gathered on each voyage, Aurora intends to support safer and more sustainable maritime practices globally.
The technology from CounterCurrent employs artificial intelligence, onboard instruments, and satellite analysis to provide tailored routing recommendations, optimizing fuel usage by aligning ship paths with current patterns. This innovation has the potential to not only reduce fuel consumption and emissions but also enhance operational safety in challenging polar conditions.
This initiative complements Aurora’s ongoing sustainability efforts, which include various projects with organizations like Seawilding, Veritree, and Clean Hub, as well as citizen-science partnerships with HappyWhale, FjordPhyto, and NASA Globe Cloud.
