Damen Shiprepair Brest Celebrates Milestone with 50th Cruise Ship Refit
Damen Shiprepair Brest has marked a significant milestone by completing its 50th cruise ship project since becoming part of the Damen Shipyards Group in 2012. This achievement underscores the yard’s commitment to enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of cruise ship refits.
The French facility recently finished work on the Disney Fantasy, following a similar project for its sister ship, the Disney Dream, in the previous year. Ronan Scolan, the Commercial Director at Damen Shiprepair Brest, emphasized the trust placed in them by loyal clients like Disney Cruise Line, stating that their partnerships, including collaborations with Meyer RE and local subcontractors, enable them to deliver sophisticated, environmentally focused refits that minimize emissions and prolong vessel lifespans.
Damen Shiprepair Brest has honed its skills in sustainable retrofits, which include improved propulsion and maneuvering systems, biocide-free silicon hull coatings, and the in-house fabrication of 160-ton bulbous bows designed to reduce drag and fuel consumption.
Located near the English Channel, the shipyard employs more than 180 specialists and leverages long-term relationships with cruise operators and technical suppliers. This milestone reflects Damen Shipyards’ broader vision to become the most sustainable and interconnected maritime solutions provider globally, with the group operating 35 shipyards and around 20 other companies across 20 countries, delivering nearly 100 vessels each year with a workforce of approximately 12,500.
