Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Repsol Forge Renewable Fuel Partnership

NCLH-Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd, the world’s fourth largest cruise ship operator, has formed a significant partnership with Repsol SA, a Spanish multinational energy and petrochemical company. They have entered into an eight-year agreement to supply renewable marine fuels at the Port of Barcelona, which represents one of the longest and most comprehensive sustainability collaborations in the cruise industry.

Starting in 2026, Repsol will provide a range of renewable fuels, including biofuels, and from 2029, renewable methanol, for NCLH’s fleet, which includes vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises during their European operations.

NCLH stated that the partnership is crucial as it ensures a reliable supply of renewable fuels at a major European port, thereby advancing its Sail & Sustain® strategy aimed at lowering greenhouse gas emissions through innovative fuel technologies. Repsol remarked that this collaboration highlights the viability of renewable fuels for reducing maritime emissions on a large scale.

The renewable methanol will be produced at Repsol’s Ecoplanta facility in Tarragona, which is set to convert 400,000 tons of municipal waste into about 240,000 tons of renewable fuel and circular products annually upon its expected operational start in 2029. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is notably the first cruise operator to secure a renewable methanol offtake agreement from this facility.

All fuels under this partnership will comply with ISCC EU certification standards, aligning with the shared goal of reaching Net Zero emissions by 2050. This alliance supports Norwegian’s broader initiative to achieve a 10% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity by 2026, with an ambitious target of 25% by 2030.

For Repsol, the partnership reinforces its strategy to expand renewable fuel production, including renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel at various facilities in Spain, also enhancing its renewable fuel distribution network across over 1,300 service stations located in the Iberian Peninsula.

This strategic partnership lays the groundwork for the long-term adoption of low-carbon fuels within the cruise industry, balancing operational reliability with substantial efforts towards maritime decarbonization.
