Viking Cruises Celebrates Milestone with Christening of 9 New Riverboats, Including Their 100th Vessel
In a significant event held in Basel, Switzerland, Viking Cruises celebrated the christening of its 100th riverboat, Viking Honir, as part of a global celebration that also marked the introduction of nine new riverboats into their fleet. This ceremony took place on October 21st and was simultaneously broadcast across six countries and three continents.
The new vessels joining the fleet alongside Viking Honir include Annar, Dagur, Eldir, Nerthus, Gyda, Amun, Thoth, and Tonle. Viking, founded in 1997, has become renowned for its large-scale naming ceremonies in the cruise industry, previously setting a Guinness World Record in 2014 by christening 16 ships in a single day.
As highlighted by Chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen, Viking’s growth strategy has shown considerable success, with 64% of the company’s 2026 capacity sold as of late September. This expansion is informed by a shift in consumer demand towards culturally immersive, destination-oriented travel experiences.
Viking continues to maintain a strong presence in Europe, holding control or priority access to 110 docking stations, while also extending its reach globally. The nine newly named ships include vessels that will operate in Vietnam, Egypt, and India, indicating the company’s strategy to diversify its offerings beyond the European market. The Viking Honir will be dedicated to itineraries on the Rhine and Danube rivers.
This multinational ceremony, led by Viking’s vice president of trade development, Michele Saegesser, emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining high standards of design, service, and cultural engagement reflective of its foundational values in the river cruising market.
