Progreso’s Transformation: The Benefits of Western Caribbean Itinerary Realignment
Mexico’s Port of Progreso in Yucatán is poised for a surge in cruise ship arrivals over the next two years, driven by the growth of the cruise market and enhancements to the port’s deep-sea facilities. According to Darío Flota Ocampo, the country’s Minister of Tourism Development, cruise lines are increasing their calls at Progreso through 2027, marking this as a significant time for the port.
Ocampo pointed out that the facility is undergoing improvements, including a dredging project that will enable it to accommodate larger vessels. The reshuffling of Western Caribbean itineraries—largely attributed to Royal Caribbean’s acquisition of Costa Maya Cruise Port—has positioned Progreso as a competitive alternative, attracting more cruise traffic.
He emphasized that due to this increased competition, other cruise lines are skirting the newly acquired Costa Maya, elevating Progreso’s role in the region. As part of a broader strategy, Royal Caribbean plans to develop the port into "Perfect Day Mexico," part of its portfolio of private destinations across the Caribbean and Bahamas.
Geographically, Progreso benefits from its proximity to the expanding homeport of Galveston, Texas, thus enhancing its appeal to cruise lines. By the end of 2025, the port anticipates welcoming over 450,000 guests, marking an impressive 80 percent increase in visitor numbers compared to the previous year.
The ongoing projects at Progreso are expected to be completed by the second half of 2026, allowing for the arrival of larger ships starting in early 2027, further cementing the port’s status as a key player in the cruise industry.
