Cruise Lines Adjust Itineraries as Hurricane Melissa Approaches: Safety First!

As Hurricane Melissa strengthens to a Category 5 and heads towards Jamaica, multiple cruise lines are altering their itineraries to prioritize the safety of passengers and crew. Scheduled to make landfall in Jamaica on October 28, Melissa is also expected to impact Cuba, The Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Given the hurricane’s trajectory, several cruise vacations are being disrupted. Cruise lines actively monitor weather conditions and have the flexibility to adjust courses to dodge adverse conditions. It’s not uncommon for them to skip certain port calls if it means keeping everyone safe.

In the recent episode of Cruise News Today, it was reported that Carnival Cruise Line is experiencing a surge in demand for adults-only cruises, especially those associated with their casino program. These cruises, while maintaining a family-friendly focus, are becoming increasingly popular, and Carnival plans to expand these offerings into 2026 from ports in Miami, Canaveral, and Galveston.

Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line has informed passengers about a new tax affecting Hawaii sailings starting January 1. This tax, part of the state’s expanded Transient Accommodations Tax, could add significant costs—approximately $250 to $500 per person—depending on how long a cruise ship stays at port in Hawaii. Although Norwegian is contesting this tax in court as unconstitutional, it remains applicable during the legal proceedings.

Changes in cruise ship itineraries due to Hurricane Melissa include:

  • Carnival Celebration which has dropped stops at Grand Turk and Amber Cove in favor of Cozumel, Nassau, and Celebration Key.
  • Disney Cruise Line is rerouting two ships: Disney Treasure will replace visits to Tortola and St. Thomas with stops at Cozumel and two visits to Castaway Cay. Meanwhile, Disney Wish will visit Castaway earlier than planned.
  • Celebrity Beyond will follow a western Caribbean route to bypass the storm, while Icon of the Seas has also altered its course by skipping St. Maarten this week.

As Hurricane Melissa intensifies, cruise operators are committed to ensuring passenger safety, and travelers are reminded to stay informed and prepared for potential itinerary changes.
