Cruise Ship Returns to Boston Following Norovirus Outbreak: A Look at Health and Safety Measures

Dozens of passengers on the Oceania Insignia cruise ship contracted norovirus during their voyage, docking in Boston on Monday after a challenging trip. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 74 of the 634 individuals on board tested positive for the highly contagious virus, which can continue to spread even after symptoms have resolved.

The ship previously docked in Portland, Maine, on Sunday, where local workers raised concerns about potential exposure, particularly highlighting the risk if asymptomatic passengers unknowingly spread the virus. JoAnn Locktov emphasized the unpredictability of interacting with guests who might not be aware of their contagious state.

The Oceania Insignia, built in 1998, is nearly 594 feet long and has a capacity for 670 guests. Currently, anyone still exhibiting symptoms of norovirus is barred from disembarking, as health officials continue to manage the outbreak.
