Coral Adventurer Cruise Canceled After Tragic Passenger Fatality on Lizard Island
Coral Expeditions has made the decision to cancel its 60-day circumnavigation of Australia aboard the Coral Adventurer, following the tragic death of passenger Suzanne Rees. Ms. Rees was reported missing during a shore excursion on Lizard Island, Queensland, just two days after the cruise departed from Cairns on October 24th.
Initial reports indicate that Ms. Rees, an experienced 80-year-old bushwalker, had participated in a guided hiking excursion but separated from the group to rest. When the ship left later without conducting a passenger count, crew members later noted her absence and returned to the island. A search involving the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and Queensland Police resulted in the discovery of her body the following day.
Coral Expeditions’ chief executive, Mark Fifield, communicated to passengers that the remaining itinerary would be cancelled due to both the fatal incident and ongoing mechanical issues. He assured that all guests would receive full refunds and announced plans to arrange their return to the mainland by chartered aircraft.
In light of the incident, AMSA has prohibited the Coral Adventurer from taking on new passengers until further investigations are complete. Officials plan to board the vessel upon its return to Cairns for further inquiries, with the state coroner set to look into the details surrounding Ms. Rees’s death.
Katherine Rees, Ms. Rees’s daughter, conveyed her family’s distress, suggesting that a lack of proper safety measures may have contributed to the tragedy. She reported that her mother had been instructed to return to the base of the trail alone after expressing discomfort due to the heat. The ship’s early departure without a complete passenger count has raised significant concerns.
Coral Expeditions has pledged its full cooperation with authorities and expressed condolences to the Rees family while also supporting the ongoing investigation.
The Coral Adventurer is designed for remote coastal operations, accommodating up to 120 guests with a crew of 46. As with most cruise operations, strict embarkation and disembarkation protocols, often aided by electronic monitoring systems, are typically enforced to prevent such occurrences. This incident, characterized by analysts as an unusual lapse in safety protocols, raises critical questions about operational safeguards within the industry.
