Holland America Sets Sail for Change: Delivering Aid and Support to Jamaica
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam arrived in Ocho Rios on November 11, 2025, loaded with disaster relief supplies. This visit not only symbolized support for the affected communities but also emphasized the importance of tourism in Jamaica’s recovery efforts.
Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, expressed gratitude towards the collaboration with local authorities and the community, highlighting the critical role of tourism in revitalizing the local economy. The Zuiderdam’s arrival followed a stop at Reynolds Pier and marked a significant step in providing aid through nearly 5,000 boxes of essential supplies. These included food, toiletries, bedding, clothing, water, and mattresses, delivered to Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management.
Hon. Matthew Samuda, Member of Parliament for Northeast St. Ann, praised the timely donation. He stated that this support is essential as the local community, particularly in St. Ann—a vital tourism corridor—struggles to restore services post-hurricane. He stressed that cruise companies’ commitment to the recovery efforts showcases a strong partnership that reinforces jobs and livelihoods in the community.
Looking ahead, Holland America Line plans to enhance its aid initiatives, including participation in Direct Relief’s On Deck for a Cause 5K walk, aimed at raising funds for the Hurricane Melissa Fund.
